So we have the left praising Colin Powell after he endorsed Barack Obama, a “total surprise” to those in the Obama campaign. Really? He was “hip-hopping” it up with African-American celebrities a few days ago when this whole thing started, obviously to shake his “Uncle Tom” image and reaffirm his “blackness”, but we knew before this who he would support and when he would announce it. Who would a black man endorse other than another black man? We have seen this for months now, so don’t tell me you’re surprised. Why would a liberal support another liberal? We have seen the craziest of crazies come out in support of Obama because he is so far to the left. This isn’t a surprise, it is the logical conclusion, but there is more to it than that…
Colin Powell is considered the most liberal General in history, so let’s start there. Now why would a man who supports affirmative action want to support a black President? You heard me, it is something he mentioned in his autobiography as well. Now by definition, affirmative action describes many policies aimed at a historically socio-politically non-dominant group (typically, minority men or women of all racial groups) intended to promote its access to education or employment. I have to say this is one of those issues I am torn on, especially since there is both good and bad to it. What is good about affirmative action is that it forces open the door for all people to advance, not simply one group within society. In theory this works, and it is meant to elevate the disenfranchised in society to higher levels, “balancing the playing field” for minorities, but we have all seen what happens in practice. This isn’t the Civil Rights Era, race isn’t keeping people down anymore, it is being used as a weapon now by those desperate to advance without hard work. I have worked along side those who are racial obsessed, threatening lawsuits because of racial prejudice which doesn’t exist. With this, affirmative action becomes a burden on the system, advancing people to maintain “fairness” and “equality” between the races. That is socialism in my books.
Why not advance people based character and experience and not skin colour? This is one of the tenets of Martin Luther King Jr’s great speech, and for people who claim that they aspire to follow in his foot steps, they sure do miss the mark. Neverfindout.org has a strong advertisement about this, repeating the point I have made on numerous occasions that MLK’s words go both ways, that we shouldn’t simply advance someone because of their race, that we shouldn’t praise them because they appear to be a “good example” of a “good black person” (the Tom Hanks approach), and we shouldn’t elect someone because of their ethnic roots instead of their experience and character. Should blacks be proud that “one of them” is running for President? YES! Should Americans be proud that a black man is running for President in a country that used to treat them as slaves? YES! Should skin colour be the reason Americans vote for him? NO! NO! NO! That is racist, reverse-racist, but racist nonetheless. We don’t need an affirmative action President, we need someone who has the EXPERIENCE the position requires.
Aside from this, Powell also is very much “pro-abortion”. Now I will say that I am “pro-choice” since I believe that there is a right time for everything, and that in some situations it is the only viable solution. Abortion should be used to save the life of a mother who would die during the pregnancy, abortion can be used if the mother is unfit to raise a child (and so can adoption, but that is the mother’s choice not ours), but abortion shouldn’t be used as a contraceptive. That is my opinion, agree or disagree, I stand by it. Now you notice how I said “pro-choice” instead of “pro-abortion”? I believe that it is a “necessary evil” in some situations while others believe it is a great procedure that should be made as available as possible to all members of society. I don’t believe in teenagers getting abortions with their parents knowing (some instances notwithstanding). This is something that should be discussed between understanding parents and their child, especially if the he or she is too young to understand the consequences of having the baby and having an abortion. I am disturbed to see how relaxed and unattached some girls are when they discuss this, when they say things like “it doesn’t matter, if I am pregnant I will get ANOTHER abortion”, and I am equally disturbed that there parents don’t seem to care about any of this. But there is more…
Another reason I say “pro-choice” is because I don’t believe in late-term abortions. Getting the procedure done within the first few weeks is one thing, but you are literally killing a full formed baby when you are aborting within the last two or three months. I have read the statistics for countries where abortion was banned, where “back-alley” abortions kill thousands of women a year, but you aren’t going to convince me that killing a baby that far along is in any way justifiable. Sure enough though, Colin Powell is supporting Barack “babies are a mistake” Obama, knowing full well his record in Illinois on this issue. Obama is the same man who voted against born-alive legislation because he believes “resources shouldn’t be wasted” saving the life of a “mistake”, so I honestly don’t know how any reasonable person could support a man like that, let alone someone I used to respect and “sing praises” about. I don’t care where you stand on this issue, I could easily write a thesis supporting both “pro-life” and “pro-choice”, but the instant you go to that extreme, the instant you declare yourself “pro-abortion” like that, you have lost any respect I have for you. As Sarah Palin said, societies are judged by how they treat even their weakest members, and I have to think this can be applied to each individual within society as well. This is why associations with those like Bill Ayers matters, something Powell and other don’t understand.
Speaking of former Weatherman and the always-has-been-always-will-be radical Bill Ayers, during his Meet the Press interview, Colin Powell expressed his disgust for the McCain campaign’s emphasis on Barack’s relationship with this domestic terrorist. For someone in the military, it pains me to see Powell miss the point completely, especially since he wouldn’t be where he is now if he himself had friends like Ayers, Dohrn and Khalidi. Many have raised this, including myself, how does someone who can’t get a job with agencies like the FBI because of his past associations become President? His is to be trusted with the country’s most secret intelligence, so how can we trust that a friend of the domestic terrorists won’t simply leak this information for their benefit? These are the issues faced by people who try to get into various intelligence departments, so why does Obama get a free pass with his history of sympathizing with the worst of the worst? Of course Meet the Press wouldn’t ask these questions, not of the man who is supposed to be Obama’s “October Surprise”.
Aside from all this, Colin Powell went on MSNBC’s Meet the Press to make an argument for why he was REALLY supporting Obama. According to Powell, it wasn’t because they shared liberal views or that both are black, OH NO, it is because of his “strength of character” and that he is a “transitional candidate” who’s charisma will win over our enemies. Excuse me? Powell then goes on to say that, “because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities, you have to take that into account, as well as his substance, he has both style and substance, he has met the standard of being a successful President, being an exceptional President” and that is why he is supporting him. What does that even mean? Nowhere does Powell mention Obama’ experience, nor his ability to handle the tough issues facing America, not even his strong leadership capabilities which will be needed in confronting the country’s enemies, most notably Vladimir Putin, the former head of the KGB and now undisputed leader of Russia. I guess that is why Joe Biden warned us yesterday eh?
Sarah Palin jumped on that today, citing Biden’s comments to attack Obama’s weak character. I guess Powell wouldn’t like that either, stating that all this is irrelevant and that the McCain campaign’s approach lately is upsetting especially with the problems facing America right now. What problems would those be? The threat of “Joe the Plumber”? What does attacking Joe Wurzelbacher have to do with the issues America faces Powell? Not even Democratic “spin-doctor” Robert Zimmerman could defend that action on Lou Dobbs Tonight last week. I was surprised when Lou Dobbs hammered Obama and Biden for this, especially when it seems the rest of CNN is already getting ready to declare “The One” the next President. What is your take on this attack Powell? Guess being an “elitist” himself, a man who demands thousands upon thousands of dollars for a speech upfront, he has no problem beating up on the “lower beings” in society. This should have been THE hint that this was all an act…
You heard me, this was an act, a set up, not the “surprise” the media claims it was. Time Online put out an article on this, stating that “Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama on Sunday by employing the military doctrine that bears his name”. This was a well timed attack to do the most damage to John McCain’s presidential hopes. I am surprised to see Powell doing the back-stabbing this time around, especially since it is Barack Obama who has mastered it. You heard me, if he really cared about his sick grandmother, which he is now using to not only take a break from the campaign trail and let this “spread the wealth around” issue fade away, but also to gain some sympathy votes, he wouldn’t have called her racist TWICE during the whole Reverend Jeremiah Wright fiasco to save himself.
Back to the point, for Powell to pull this, it goes to show that he isn’t the man I have respected throughout my high school and university years, the an who stood beside two Presidents during various national and international incidents, and why? He did it all to advance his own agenda, so that after all that he could bask in his own self-importance and live the high-life by over charging for speeches. He isn’t a Republican, no matter what his registration card says, and knowing what we have known for months, this endorsement wasn’t a surprise. On the MSM could celebrate a turn-coat like Powell while villainizing the very same “War Hero” he back-stabbed.
When Dan Rather is pointing out your bias, you have a problem. Wipe that look of “surprise” off your face, stop celebrating this endorsement and try to retain any sense of dignity you have left and report the next two weeks fairly. Pathetic…
UPDATE: Even John Bolton, Bush’s ambassador at the UN, said Obama was a weak candidate who would be abused by world leaders like Vladimir Putin. It is good that Joe Biden is warning Democratic supporters now before November, especially since none of them will listen to us on this issue. I just love how Colmes squirmed when Bolton challenged his naive answers…
